You can't use IrDA since that requires handshaking, but you can do
broadcasting. IrDA specifies a cone of transmission which is not that
narrow (if you are using a palm), so that you should be able to get 5
side by side at 3 feet to respond. If you use a repeater (like a
remote control booster), you can transmit to practically every palm in
the room.
