That's "core" as in the core of the OS.  We're moving towards a more
componentized model as more licensees produce more devices with a wider
variety of features.  The 'core' of the OS is the UI and System layers
along with most of the hardware access layer.  Many apps, panels, shared
libraries, etc. all live outside the "core" OS.

I've seen core - I mean the old magnetic memory stuff, and played corewars
too, but that wasn't an influence here.  A cool thing about core memory
though is it keeps its state even when no power is applied.  While the
traditional ferrite rings are dead now (too power hungry, too slow, too
hot), there's research being done on 'micro core' memory for large scale
non-volatile applications... e.g. it could compete with FLASH one day, and
you could have the core PalmOS software "ROM" in core in your hand.  :-)
