in my case sound goes out from pc speaker. i have xp with latest updates in case you have it redirected to soundcard check its mixer settings and try to unmute everything, maybe you will find channel where it goes to. i remember such thing happened with my ancient computer where i had soundblaster awe32 soundcard, maybe some new ones do it too
