I want to be able to use an enhanced multi-line FIELD-like widget that can show
bold, italics, superscript, different colors, and different font sizes. It is a
relatively small subset of what rtf and html can deal with. It needs to be
scrollable and with the capability of forcing a certain line to be visible
(i.e. make the 50th line of a 200 line chapter be visible).

I realize this question has been asked before, but I wasn't able to find
anything that was particularly usable from looking at the archives back to 2003
or so. I did find references to "plucker", but it seems to be GPL, which isn't
an option.

As far as I could tell, the guidance seems to be to "roll your own" ... to
interpret "embedded tags" and change the font attributes for drawing text. That
wouldn't seem to be too bad for a small page that fits within the FIELD ... but
a significant task for a page of arbitrary size that implements "controlled
scrollability" and "word-wrap" for a large page of content.
