Have you looked at the Smart Text Engine? Granted it only supports the later devices (Treos and a few others), but it has all the features you describe. Plus it will recognize phone #'s, emails, and URLs, and make them hyperlinks. It's documented in the Treo600 Developer Guide, which you should be able to download from the Palm website.
