After talking to some other developers, and testing with other cradles, I've 
concluded that my cradle is in fact "defective".  The
hotsync button is stuck in the on position, which is why my devices sync 
automagically.

Personally I like it.  I'm guessing the "defect" could be easily duplicated 
with a soldering iron, either bridging the contacts on
the small circuit board, or replacing the normally open switch with a normally 
closed switch.
