Some devices are configured to sync automatically when they are inserted in the 
cradle.  Although I guess if you're doing this
you've already had the good sense to close the hotsync monitor.  Without much 
knowledge of the specifics,  I would feel safer about
the whole operation if the device doesn't even think of starting a HotSync (who 
knows what cleanup functions might run after the
insert into the cradle but before you tap cancel).  In general I would guess 
that the less you do to the device the higher
probability you would have of recovering the data you need.
