I have a question into Handspring's developer support about this but
have received no response to date.
OS 3.1 will do 4 level greyscale if you do the Seeing Gray calls, but
a Visor has an EZ and will do 16 level grayscale.
For now, I've had to create a separate routine for displaying PNG
files (PiNGer, part of PalmBoxer) in 16 level grayscale just for the
Visor. OS 3.3 on my V works fine, as does the Visor, but in 4 level
grey if I don't hack hardware. But the contrast slider isn't
available in that mode. Then there's color, which requires 3.5, and I
don't know how the palette operations work on a 16 level Palm (and
have been too busy to try - it works for color, and the old calls work
for grey).
On my www.execpc.com/~tz I wrote an example (hardware hack since it
was pre-3.3) greyscale doodlepad, but the PiNGer backend source is
more mature, and you can compare things (both are GPL, the latter is
part of boxer at palmboxer.sourceforge.net).
