Actually I believe you should be good down to PalmOS 3.3.

I've found that it's PalmOSes prior to 3.3 where things start to get
unpleasant if you want to support all the display modes the device
processor is capable of.

I've personally found that I only need to write directly to the graphics
registers on OLD palms (i.e., < OS 3.5) as a way of creating a graphics
"glue" library.

If Palm added 3.5 graphics capabilities to an official graphics glue
library, then I wouldn't need to hack the LCD registers at all.

Of course, you never know if that need will come up in the future as
well.  :)
