Actually, it's recommended in most cases, when you have a control that is not needed for a period of time. This is partially because simply "graying out" a button really wastes space on a handheld's very small screen. The idea is that if the user doesn't need it, they don't need to see it but not be able to use it. If the user sees it, then the user can use it. If they can't, they can't.
