> Purge your mind PC/Mac desires. Embrace the Zen of Palm...

If you ask me what one hand clapping sounds like, I'm outta here. ;-) Am
just going on experience from various systems over the years, where things
that appear/disappear on their own whim cause confusion and can be more of a
hindrance than a help. (Have you ever asked yourself "now WHERE was that
button? It was here just a minute ago..") While there's no arguing the
value of Palm-display real estate, there's merit in asking what _else_ can
be done with the same space? Do you want to display other controls there,
and end up in a situation where under conditions that render the most
controls active, you suffer from visual cram? When you dedicate the same
space to multiple uses, you end up in an analogous situation to overloading
a single variable to represent divergent things - something that can be
useful, but used with great caution and copious documentation.
Far be it from me to argue with established and quotable publications -
no, wait, that's exactly what I'm doing. Heh, oh well. Professional fly in
the ointment syndrome, I suppose. "The only truly intuitive interface is
the nipple. All else is learned." (Bruce Ediger?) and all that, eh?
