1. The contacts are dirty or connection is loose. This does happen to
me - usually when I don't seat the V in the cradle right. If you have
a travel sync cable, try it instead.
2. Some hack or other program on the Vx is killing the serial port.
Try resetting with page-up, disable hacks, etc. and see if it still
happens.
