I'm belatedly responding to this. I'm not familiar with the pricing of 
competitive products, but I can speak with authority on our own 
(PalmPrint/SCS PrintServer), and licensing print driver software doesn't 
cost anything like $40 a copy. So while there certainly are reasons for 
"rolling your own", for most people, cost will not be among them. Letting 
someone else do the printing software lets you concentrate on your own 
application development, rather than reinventing the wheel, and means 
that when new technologies (e.g., IrDA) or new printers (e.g., Monarch 
6015) come onto the market, someone else is effectively updating that 
aspect of your application for you.
