No, you're in luck - maybe :)
I solved this problem for a previous employer so, unfortunately, I can't
look at the code to remind myself what I did. I'll try to describe the
general solution, though.
I seem to recall that we _were_ getting back an error code, but in the
main event loop. I was handling the inetSockStatusChangeEvent case after
calling INetLibGetEvent and checking the sockErr member of that structure.
Now, problem is, I don't remember what the error code was, and I don't
have the inetlib or netlib headers with me. You might try checking for
this error, and then looking up the code in INetlib.h.
