We ran into the same problem with our Marietta PDE (tm) software.
We have to support the Symbol 1500 and hence have to write
to a v3.0 base level. (though at some point that'll change, of course)
Basically, I had to implement a screen to enter a date.
I don't see a better solution for you. Not too bad though, only a
few hours effort.
