It may well be for real. One of my customers, not the guy mentioned in
that article, told me that his Palm V fried the serial port on his Dell
computer. I myself have a Dell Dimension 4100 on my desk at work, and
I've noticed the static discharge. I now take precautions to discharge
the static buildup before placing my Palm V in its cradle, or before
touching it if it's already in the cradle. At home my Palm V cradle is
connected to a 1994-vintage no-name computer (don't laugh), and I have
never observed a static zap on that computer.
