The VIIx always shipped with Palm OS 3.5, which support 4-bits per pixel
grey scale.
The VII shipped with either 3.2 or 3.2.5, depending on if it was an
early VII with a Dragonball or a later VII with a Dragonball EZ
processor.
Only the EZ VII's support 4-bit grey. The original Dragonball didn't
handle that many shades.
All VII can be upgraded to Palm OS 3.5 -- perhaps you should target that
and require the user to use the new OS version.
