I have recently released a Palm program, and most reports from the field are
positive. But during testing, we had access to too few of the many hardware
configurations our users are using (and, frankly, we had an inadequate beta
testing plan). By far the most common complaint from our users is "the
program won't work with machine X if I put the databases on memory card Y."
I have implemented what I believe to be straight-forward support for VFS,
and on our VFS card in a Palm m505, all tests have been successful. Ditto
with the Handspring Flash Module 8MB in a Visor Prism (which didn't need VFS
support in the first place). But somebody with a PalmGear 16MB Flash Module
(which I hadn't heard of) is having trouble if my databases or the app are
on the module instead of in main memory,...etc.
There seems to be a huge proliferation of memory enhancers for Palm and
Handspring PDAs, and I'm very frustrated about how to go about testing on
them. Could any of you provide a brief taxonomy of the current kinds of
memory cards/modules/sticks/flashes/compactflashes/..., and what sort of
application support each requires? Consider this a pathetic plea from a guy
who is near, but not quite arrived at Wit's End. (Or Witt's End. Maybe
I'll just read the magazines while I wait....)
Thanks,
Jeff Ondich
