I'm fairly sure it's not using a serial number to figure out that it's the
same Palm after a HotSync username change on the desktop. That wouldn't work
with mask ROM devices, for one. For another, if you hard reset a Palm, it'll
ask you which user it is when you next HotSync. That means the identity of
the user is stored in the device RAM, not in ROM. Unless you're willing to
limit your market to flash ROM based devices, you're going to have to use a
registration scheme that doesn't rely on having a device serial number.
