Which USB driver are you using? You need to have installed Handspring's desktop software, not Palm's. Palm's driver will Hotsync with a Visor, but it doesn't support the debug channel. Also, the very latest Palm Desktop software posted by Handspring seems to have some debugging bugs, at least on WinXP. On my personal laptop, it brought down Windows XP when resetting the device with a driver crash (blue screen).
