On Linux, you could also use pty's to perform a local sync.  However, 
I recall having intermittent problems with pilot-link trying to bind 
to the serial port when doing this.  But YMMV.  FWIW, here are some 
old instructions I have:

* Set the Serial port in the Preferences to /dev/pty*. (The suggested 
device was /dev/ptyqe.)
* Start a new emulation session.
* Select HotSync menu item.
* In another terminal, execut "pilot-xfer /dev/tty* -l".  (That is, 
/dev/ttyqe if using the suggested pty.)
