Using the procedural alarms feature of the alarm manager, it is possible to set up an application so that it gets a chance to run once a minute, even when the device is "off". You can run even more often while the device is on. This is still just a single thread, but you're given a chance to do something on a periodic basis, which may be all you need? -- Peter Epstein
