the HotSyncs UserName registration method is in my opinion the best way to do it. The HotSyncs UserName is present in all devices, you have to specify it whenever you hotsync your handheld the first time.
Especially Handango can calculate the registration code immediately, you have to write your validation routine as UPN string. There is an article about it from Mr. Ardiri somewhere on palmsource.
At the end you have to write your own code to validate the keys on the device and probably your own code to generate the keys at home. There is nothing on the device at default. This wouldn't be very safe :-)
