The contrast is generally not very good for old devices. But you should adjust the contrast whenever you switch between b/w and grayscale.
The maximum value for k is 8 and it goes all the way down to 1. Every time it shifts tmp_depth one bit to the left. The goal is to find the first occurrence of a 0 bit. Then we know the best possible depth on this device (starting from 8 bit). You can of course call winScreenMode directly, but then you will not be able to switch on the best possible display depth. I guess for IIIxe the possible dpeth is 2 (4 different gray scales).
