Waste of time? I don't think so.

First of all, PDAs may be personal (read: used by
one person, not shared), but that typically also
means that they have personal information stored in
it.
And more and more they also have corporate information
on them (it's a major focus for Palm and MS to get
devices into the enterprise).

And people do leave them lying around, just like
they let other personal stuff lying around. And
PDAs get stolen, just like other (personal) stuff
gets stolen.

Is it really surprising that one of the most popular
categories of applications is "security" software
(programs that lock your Palm, encrypt your memos,
store passwords, credit card numbers, ... encrypted)?

So yes, there is a need for (better) security. Note
that the latest iPAQ has a fingerprint scanner
built-in. I hope (and expect) that these will become
standard in all handhelds sooner or later.

Oliver
