FWIW, one of my classes is wireless java development,
and one of the other students in the class has a
tungsten.  He uses WTK1.04 and turns the programs into
PRCs, but I believe he can also get the standard
virtual machine from Palm running on the unit as well
- not sure if any of that will help, but...
