Of course you're right, though I'm sure you know there's this pesky gap between reading and understanding, at least for some beginners. :)
Yes it turns out the sample projects I'd downloaded happened to be out of date. After commenting out one line from a makefile, one of them actually compiled (gasp!), and I've got "Hello, world!" staring at me from the palm screen even now. Woo hoo, on to actual programming.
