In view of some of the responses I just want to clarify that the purpose of
the whole idea is not to need any sort of desktop software at all (including
HotSync), thus being able to go to any PC and download/upload files without
any installation requirements on the PC's themselves (as the USB hard disk
memory is a Windows 2000/XP embedded driver). It is thus not necessary for
the Palm to "understand" the files it carries, just to act as file carrier
between PC's.

Personally, I'm a bit frustrated over the number of gadgets I always seem to
carry around. I now have a Tungsten W which means that I have at least
decreased the gadget number by one (PDA+mobile phone). I have its USB cable
with me for battery charge from the car, so it would be nice to have a
secondary use for it.

I looked at the Sony Cli website but couldn't understand if their USB
memory functionality required some form of Desktop program to be installed,
although the text implies that to be the case. This text is taken from their
web site:
First install the Data Import software and USB drivers from the Install
CD.
Then, simply connect the cradle to your PC via the USB cable and
Microsoft Windows Explorer will see the Memory Stick media as a
"Removable Disk."
