I don't think PalmOne has yet realized that there is commercial/industrial market for their products or at least don't understand the slow adoption rate these companies have. I hope they realize that it can take years for a potential industrial customer to adopt hardware and software into a manufacturing market. The inexpensive Palm units have a great appeal to these types of customers.
PalmOne may have not, but there are Palm OS licensees that do understand this -- Symbol and Acceca. Symbol's had a well-supported and stable product line for a while, while Acceca's new Mezura device looks to be perfect for lots of industrial applications. No, they aren't as inexpensive at PalmOne devices, but they come from companies that understand that market, a market in which PalmOne hasn't shown a big interest.
The Meazura isn't too expensive for its job ($349 according to http://www.palmsource.com/handhelds/#aceeca), and it supports a lot of standard industrial protocols. It's not small or pretty compared to a Tungsten T|T3, but its nicer looking that most industrial controllers. :)
