Standard text fields respond to double-tapping as well, so I don't think
it's completely out of the question. IIRC, the Palm UI guidelines say that
applications should not require the user to double-tap. I.e. the user should
always be able to perform the given action through an alternative means
(i.e. a button or a menu item).
