Actually, perhaps compiler 'bug' is not what's going on here, but rather a
configuration issue of cygwin/GCC.

I suspect that it is what is happening, but I don't really know very much
about the cygwin/GCC development environment, so I'm afraid I can't answer
that.

Unfortunately, looking at the disassembly is the only sure way to figure out
what's going on. If you want you can send me the disassembly dumps through
Nortel corporate email and I'll see if I can spot the problem...
