Dimensions of bitmap to save were 160 & 160. Now, BmpGetDimensions gives dimensions of -258 and -258, and rowBytes of 65278!

Probably not. :-) Seems your record save code needs to be examined a bit more closely.
Why not try a simpler case (POSE, OS < 5.X) where you don't have separate header and bit chunks and see what happens? Also, don't do any compression (use a bitmap < 64K).
