well, grab hold of a unit that doesn't have an OMAP processor - that is,
a Tungsten|T3 or a Tungsten|C. we needed raw ir on a project recently,
and recommended only the use of these two models (yes, was forced to raw ir)

btw: you are not restricted to IrComm, you can do raw ir - but, you
need to ensure that you have the appropriate IrDA framing bytes around
your packets.

the problem is that OMAP CPU.

texas instruments integrates the UART within the CPU - and, being
'forward thinking' only, they decided that all infra-red communications
should be done using IrDA framing.

the UART on previous devices was not so restrictive. hence, it was
easy the same code on 4.1 works on 5.x if the UART can allow it. :)
i know, been there - coded it up and it works.
