While working on a project, I've noticed that for the builtin applications there seem to be two databases that are kept up to date.
For example, there is AddressDB and ContactsDB-PAdd for the Contacts application. There is DatebookDB and CalendarDB-PDat for the Calendar.
This is just on the Palm Tungsten E and Tungsten T3 for now. For compatibility with programs that directly modify the PIM databases, PalmOne wrote a module that will monitor changes to those DBs and sync them with their new PIM databases. This scheme was described in more details here back with the T|E and T|T3 were introduced.
The FAQ at pluggedin.palmone.com has some info on this as well. Note: these new PIM apps are PalmOne only; you will not see them on devices from other licensees.
