Not true, it depends on the UART.  Also, if the logic levels are not up to
standard levels, no data would flow.  Make sure your sensor doesn't depend
on RTS or DTR for power to drive the signal levels.  Some RS232 line drivers
draw there power from the host device connected to them rather than the
local power supply.   Most hand helds don't provide the IEEE specified
levels or current some devices rely on.  Your PC, however, would.
