Which is not to be confused with USB *and* RS232.

Many newer devices do not have an external serial port available, especially on
lower-end devices where mini-USB only is fairly common.

Also bear in mind the USB on existing devices (other than the Alphasmart Dana)
is strictly a client side USB.  So it can't attach directly to other USB
clients, such as printers, cameras, etc.  A (very) few devices are made with a
master USB configuration in order to work around this limitation.  A couple of
examples are the iGo modem and the Enfora wifi case for the Tungsten E.

All but some very old palm os devices will support IR communications, at least
when framed in IrDA packets.  Raw serial IR is not supported on OMAP cpu based
devices, commonly used in many OS 5 based units.
