Ran into the same problem designing an airline load manifest application - battery life and unit cost (of course!). Turned out that the grayscale Palms with "AAA" batteries (VIIx, m105, m125, etc...) was the best bet for us - and for the flight crews using the device - going eBay prices for used/refurbished devices running between $12.00 - $35.00 or so - not bad for a handheld that is destined for the abuse of riding along in a flight bag for weeks/months at a time - but better work every leg!
<grin> We went to all the trouble to make sure that we didn't abuse the batteries while maintaining acceptable performance on the 16Mhz/8MB devices - then had a couple of Captains go out and buy the latest and greatest! After experiencing battery life - some are opting for a VIIx, m105, m125, etc... to stay in the flight bag for a backup! I'm very new to the Palm world - so I see things from a Windows CE 1.x -> 2003/Mobile standpoint - The Palm design philosophy has got a lot of great things going for it! Guess my point is that not everyone is leaving Palm OS for Windows Mobile/.Net, sometimes it is the other way around! Have a great day! Shawn. Shawn M. While Microsoft Win mobile initially look the best bet as a starting platform, the MS based PDA's have a major floor for the application we are aiming at. Battery life! The applications we were looking at required a mobile platform that would run for 12 -24Hrs the ms devices were not even close. I do see smartphones as an ideal solution however they lack hardware interconnect for custom applications. -- For information on using the Palm Developer Forums, or to unsubscribe, please see http://www.palmos.com/dev/support/forums/ -- For information on using the Palm Developer Forums, or to unsubscribe, please see http://www.palmos.com/dev/support/forums/
