Perhaps. But if you are a professional programmer (as opposed to programming 
for fun or your own boss), your only real choice is (1) implement the 
specification you have been given or (2) look for another job. How to implement 
it is often up to you - but *what* to implement and what not usually isn't.

In fact, I would argue even in the designer case. Very often you are forced to 
design what most of the users want - not what you think would be "the purest 
design" or anything like that.

Of course, if you're creating an application for your own pleasure, you can 
have the luxory of doing it the way you think it ought to be done, and the 
stupid users be damned. Alas, in real life, one can't often have this little 
luxory... :-(
