Having said all that, I must admit that our PPCs are constantly wiped, even after just as little as a week of inactivity. I have NEVER EVER experienced that happening to a Palm, even after months. Even so, to be on the safe side, Palm is doing something to address this, which is positive, I guess.

I agree to the previous statements that some users buy PDAs just to use "one power app" and that a considerable number of "late adaptor" users leave their PDAs in the drawer for weeks inbetween use.

There are three very strong issues for Palm to implement some form of non-volatile memory, where data survives the batteries going dead or being taken out, or even the user doing a hard reset.

1) Some customers, especially in the "enterprise" space, collect essential data and can't accept a device that loses data.

2) People have become accustomed to data retention characteristics of cell phones, digital cameras and the like, which don't lose your data, and now routinely expect all devices to behave like that.

3) Increasingly, cell-phone based devices will rarely or never be HotSync'ed and therefore won't have a valid backup to restore from.

I suspect that #2 is the true driving force behind this. My wife, for example, only HotSync's her T-T in order to backup its data and is always irritated that she's has to periodically remember to do that.
