My US Sony Clie NX70V/U has a hold button which (as far as I can tell)
physically disconnects the hard-buttons and removes power from the
display.  Applications continue to run in the background.

And apart from that phisical disconnection it generates a keyDownEvent. Unfortunately on LifeDrive it doesn't :-(

Is there any way to detect the device was put on "hold" or released
from it?

Not as far as I know, but there's bound to be a memory-mapped register
somewhere with the information.  Try a memory dump of registers and
high- and low-memory areas before and after the hold is placed.  (A
10-second delay before the dump will accomplish this.)

Can you direct me to further reading on dumping these 3 areas (registers+low+high memory)?
