Serial on Palm IIIxe

One of my users has purchased a refurbished Palm IIIxe from Fry's 
Electronics (for $29.95!). It has Palm OS v4.1 installed. My software 
uses the RS-232 serial port and when the serial port is opened, he gets 
the error message "unsupported processor type".

Does this mean the IIIxe does not support RS-232?
Does any Palm III support RS-232?
