By cross platform I meant Palm/Windows Mobile/Symbian/other handhelds, but
no matter.

To build on your proficiency in C/C++ you will probably want to use either
PODS (Palm OS Developer Suite) or Code Warrior. Watch this space and you
will see various discussions about which is better. The fact that the
debate will rage is evidence that either choice has its advantages, and you
are probably ok with either product.

PODS is free from PalmOS, and in your position as a starving student (hey,
I'm a prof, I know) you should give this serious consideration. It is based
on the Eclipse IDE, integrates reasonably well with the Palm Simulator for
testing, and is fairly stable. One advantage is that you can assume (maybe)
that since it is from PalmOS it will be supported as long as there are
Palms, or until they come up with a better tool. One disadvantage is that
it is large, and you should have a reasonably fast machine.

Code Warrior has been around since the Dead Sea just felt a little sick and
was at one time the official Palm development system. It is therefore a
very mature platform, and though apparently there were some hard times
where the product seemed to no longer be supported, the Metrowerks site
does sell and support the product currently. Academic pricing is $149.

My suggestion, given your needs, is to install and try PODS first, and if
you find that things just aren't working out then switch to Code Warrior.

Hope this helps,

Jeff Summers
