I have set myself a personal goal to learn to write Palm OS Treo applications within the next 6 months. I have purchased a copy of CW 9.3, and started reading the Palm SDK documentation.

I ran into an issue today with CW, and called support. Apparently I just spent $400 on an end of life product, that I can't get support for. They directed me to this list.

I tried to follow the instructions that came with the software to create a sample app..

When I finished the wizard for a new project, I got the following error message:

Couldn't complete the last command because the template file 'C:\Program Files\Metrowerks\CodeWarrior\Templates\Palm_OS_Templates\pol- common.mtl' could not be found.

I am also, looking for anyone who can help me get over the initial learning curve of compiling my first application.

It is very frustrating, as there are not many resources dedicated to new developers. It seems everything is aimed at the shrinking base of experienced Palm OS developers.

There are no simple "Hello World" tutorials that I could find. Everything assumes that you are already a developer, or worse are already a Palm OS developer.

(I know there are options for novices, like Handheld-Basic, SuperWaba, and PocketC, but I am looking to learn to eventually write armlets that can run in the background, and am not convinced the path of least resistance will get me closer to my goal.)

I have three sets of applications I want to write.

1) Network diagnostic utilies, e.g. dig, traceroute, ping, etc.
2) Simple legal billing timer. (For my wife) This will integrate with a webservice to allow easy desktop access to billing and client summaries. I got the idea from splashblog.
3) Bash-lite shell - I'd like to implement a simple unix-like operating environment that run's as a palm os arm application. This would be a continual work in progress, with the eventual goal being an environment similar to Cygwin for the Treo. This environment would be persistent, and allow background operations, including cron to run.
4) A game... This is going to be the one that I will start in 6 months or so.. This will have a network component, so I ordered a copy of Palm OS Networking Programming. (If you want to hear more about the game idea, please contact me offline).

I am looking for any help on the start of my new journey. I am reasonably smart, and can pick things up pretty quickly, if I have the right source materials.

Thanks in advance,
Brian
