on some devices the processor puts limitation on the ir operation and
any raw mode is impossible (this is the OMAP processor devices. Also
sony HHE processor is undocumented so it is hard to deal with). On all
recent palms (the PXA processor) you can freely set the IR out pin as
a gpio pin and freely write to it as you wish, sending out any signal
you want.

Thanks for the reply. My idea was to have the program be accessible to almost
anyone with a v3.5 Palm or above. Right now I've got access to a system with
Palm OS 5 Garnet, but only while I'm working for my employer this summer. My
brother has an old m100 at home with the v3.5 OS, so I guess I should adjust to
programming with that older operating system, since I want my application to
have a low barrier to entry (so that people could just go pick up $6 m100s off
of eBay to use it, the target audience for this application is probably made up
largely of people who don't own handhelds already).
Who knows, it might be easier to handle IR on the old v3.5 device?
