portage is still the one and only *official* gentoo package management.
You can't compare it with e.g. dpkg of Debian where all package
management
is just a wrapper for it.
Have portage installed and forget about it. And be warned about bug
reports
where you provide 'paludis -info' as an attachment. Sometimes it's not
very nice
what you get for an answer…
