I tried Paint.Net and Gimp. I didn't like either one very much. I use Photo Explosion SE. It's the free version. You can get it for mac or pc. You can do much more with it than any other program I've tried. One thing I love about it is that you can select an area by color, then paint that area without worry of getting outside the lines. You can also rotate, flip, and resize with it. You can add props, effects, shadows, frames, and your signature. Besides the image editing, you can make banners, greeting cards, stationery, signs, posters, name tags, ID and business cards, postcards, photo frames, scrapbooks, bookmarks, gift tags, and CD labels. Gang, I use Paint.Net. It is free, supports layers, plugins, and other advanced features. It is also actively maintained and has a good sized user community. I've included some info about it below. There is also another free paint type application that I have been looking at lately. It is called Pixia. It looks like it might have some interesting features.
