If you're using thread, look for waxed button thread, as it doesn't get fuzzy like regular thread. That's a left over from years of doing spark plug wires on plastic car kits.

Google images shows some pics of reproductions which show your forest of wires, but also period photos that mostly don't seem to have been well-enough focused to make all the rigging visible.
