This is something that I find very funny, when it's done on TV shows.

NCIS has a bad habit of including "in-jokes", such as Michael Weatherly's 
character telling another "I'd have a better chance of hooking up with 
Jessica Alba" or him describing David McCallum's character as looking like 
an older version of Illya Kuryakin.  They also had Mark Harmon's character 
discussing the Modus Operandi of Ted Bundy.

That said, I've tried to read the fantasy books, I just can't get into them. 
Honestly, I don't even care for Star Trek novels.

  All of sitcom TV and most motion pictures are actually alternate-
reality SF. I mean, Archie Bunker couldn't be expected to watch "All
In The Family" on Tuesday nights, now could he? ;>)
