You're right about Richard Burton, but the book I had dealt with Tom Mix.

I just liked all the eclectic mix of characters, alternate worlds,
religious inferences and other dimensions!. By the way I think that
the principal character in Riverworld series was Sir Richard Burton,
the one who translated the Kama Sutra for the first time, not Tom Mix.
