I've seen some of the "what-if" books, and they've been intriguing, but I 
haven't taken one on, yet.

The "Riverworld" series was ... interesting. <G>

If you read historical fiction, may I suggest Harry Turtledove's
"what-if" historical SF? Try the "Videssos Cycle" series and the
"Legion" series, or "Guns of the South" for something comparatively
modern.
